I about A.E.

My work is a peculiar synthesis of image, abstraction and compulsion. It bridges the gap between painting and sculpture.

Current work is all about process, investigation and experimentation. Let the process unfold. Preserve the element of chance. I allow myself to work in an unedited fashion exploring the expressive properties of the materials, of their textures, rhythms and colors.

Past work was primarily 3 dimensional, narrative, and surreal. Much of it was governed by a dark, absurdist humor, drawing on imagery both modern and medieval. It featured a myriad of found and reclaimed objects that evoked a sense of history. The palette included discarded and transformed wood and metal objects, fabrics, old trims and ephemera, acrylic paints and gels, oil stick, and washes and glazes.

Whenever I traveled it was virtually impossible to produce weighty and fragile mixed media on wood pieces and bring them home. So, these were the times that I would concede to working on paper, which I also enjoyed but never took very seriously, until...

A year ago I was at an artists' retreat on the Greek island of Skopelos. Having to travel pretty light, I had brought only some cheap paper, acrylics, and glue with me. One day, when I wasn't occupied with devouring the fig tree outside the studio, I was wandering around the discarded/recycled paper bin area and laid hands on this deliciously seductive paper. It turned out to be Fabriano. I immediately abandoned the crappy paper I had brought with me. I luxuriated in this heavy, lively paper! After gesso-ing up a bunch of it, and mixing what few acrylics I'd brought and foraged, I began ripping and gluing. Then, I introduced some cutouts from old magazines discovered under a work table, added other found ephemera, small jewels and parts of machinery that are best left undefined, and, voila! What developed from that was a series of flattish collages. Within these works I began to explore a method of solving compositional and spatial problems in a primarily two-dimensional format.

Paper can be very finely shaped or ripped with abandon. Layer upon layer of paper or wash or gel or acrylic paint, or some misanthropic coil of brass spring can interact in the same space. Yeah - let's try that. Perhaps there will be a conversation. Then again - possibly not...

Where pieces used to be narrative, albeit surreal, they are now muffled, magical, more like something born of this bizarre, dramatic weather patterning that we are experiencing.

Layering is still a major force in all these pieces. I speak of architecture, time, climate, texture and the relationship of one material or color to another. I am still drawn to ambiguous, mysterious and instinctual environments, albeit more abstract than before. Pieces are painted, glued, screwed, nailed, wired, pegged... whatever works to form a dynamic whole. Working in this fashion totally engages, stimulates and frustrates the non-verbal, cognitive part of my brain.

Ultimately, the weaving of disparate objects and material into a unified composition is the challenge and the appeal.
